Assuming its a Window's computer:
Start Menu> Control Panel> system
Hardware Tab> Device Manager.
Look for a yellow spot with a black ! this should represent your sound card.
Select it and click the [Del] key
Then click the refresh button at the top of the Device manager.
When it finds the sound card it should ask for permission to search for drivers on the internet, authorise this.
If it works, reboot.
If not I suggest contracting a qualified professional.
You can expect to pay less than £50 to have your soundcard replaced with a basic one. Approximately £10 to buy one in Maplins and do it yourself.

it happened to my computer a few times before. Just reboot the computer, and everything will come back. im not sure what happens tho., maybe a clash in software or sth. OR u might check the sound control panel which u can view by clicking the little loud speaker icon on ur desktop bar. Be careful not to check the box on the second column Wave.
