We just bought a house with a swing set in the back yard, the old owners put boards up and filled it with wood chips, they are old and molded and it's full of weeds...what is the best thing to put under it that is cheap and low on maint.

The wood chips are actually the cheapest, and easiest to maintain. The previous owner had obviously not replaced them in several years. If it were me...I would use the boards that are already up. I would empty the wood chips that are already there and then paint the boards (assuming that they are in equally bad shape). Then, spray the ground liberally with weed killer and refill with new mulch or chips.

I think that no matter what surface type you use you will kill the grass underneath of it. Regardless, most people are using recycled rubber mulch-- its basically shredded rubber tires, it is clean and provides a forgiving surface should the little one happen to fall- you can get it from any home improvement store for a few dollars a bag since you are gong to be using it on a small scale. Or if you are really concerned about the grass you could just place a few bags worht of sand at the foot of the slide, and then you are only killing 1 or 2 square feet of grass.

Personally, I find that sand (white, like beach sand) works best. Cats tend to use the "litterbox" if you use dirt, but I find plain white sand works good, doesn't get the kids dirty, and is much more comfy. Wood chips look pretty, but they attract bugs, which is not a good thing!! Good luck

Get rid of all the old stuff, then lay out some lanscaping cloth and cover that with about 3" deep sand or small pea gravel. Myself, I prefer the pea gravel. good luck

pea gravel as long as your children are old enough not to try and eat the rocks also this isnt bery good for people who use wheelchairs or walkers. Other than that it is a nice ground fill for playgrounds.

If you can find it locally, a good thing to use is ground up tires. Your local recycling center, if they can't supply it, should be able to tell you where you can get it.

It is very good for children's play areas!
