Because when someone looks serious and I take it personally they say "just joking! Can't you take a joke?"
Well not when they look serious!! How to discern?

aaaa.....try to be serious too and when they say "just joking", you can say "i wasn't..." and then "kidding...just joking. can't you take a joke?"...besides if they were really serious and you didn't figure it out, by being serious they don't see the difference.

Watch their eyes, they usuall give it away if they are not being serious. I have a guy at work who is always telling jokes but he looks real serious. I always look at his eyes when he is talking to see if he is joking or not

If it's unexpected, shocking, and not said in spite or during the heat of an argument, the person is likely joking.
