The way I had it explained to me is this:

A long time ago, the time of horses, chariots and walking, people were typically armed. Being on the right side had one's shield out against passing persons (the vast majority of people are right-handed). This was the Roman custom and Rome pretty much took over the whole known Western world.

In the English isles, though, the tribes there practiced the reverse - you passed someone with your weapon closest. The Romans never did get a real strong foothold in the British Isles and many customs remained.
