My friend is going to Iraq and doesn't want to take his orginal DVD's as they will get ruined. He's looking at copying them, they are his, not selling or lending to others, just copying to save the originals. any info???

It is perfectly legal to copy any copyright protected material for personal use. However, sometimes customs people get a little overzealous about people having copies of movies fearing they are pirated and will confiscate them, but that is something to worry about when he comes back.

Copying DVDs for personal use in not a violation of the Copyright Law.

To the best of my knowledge, there is a legal loophole which allows you to make back-up copies of copyrighted works you own as long as you do not intend to distribute those copies. This goes for DVDs, CDs, VHS, computer software, etc.

Copyright law on digital media does allow one archive copy. He's okay.
