Unlike what gdovhull states, Traveler cheques are no good, not very liked in Europe and hard to exchange for cash, and costly to boot. American express is the credit card that is not accepted in most places in Europe, it has a bad reputation.

MasterCard and Visa are the most used in Europe, along with several European cards using the same systems.

For cash withdrawals, take a debit card, and check with your bank what it will cost to use it.
It should be free or token money only, if they charge more ask around for a different card that is cheaper in use.
(Also check with your credit card company, just to know whether to use it or not.)

Travellers cheques are a good idea and also American express is accepted in most places. However i'm pretty sure mastercard can be used throughout europe especially in the UK which should work well for you.
