yes they do as the turbines cant cope and can cause damage as they have to spin faster and faster

Well, not necessarily, but they might. Wind turbines can only take so much speed before it can cause damage, and they start losing efficiency. Some of them have built in systems that turn the blades away from the wind, so the wind affects it less and they can keep them spinning at a good speed. However, during storms, where wind is unpredictable, they might shut it down completely.

I'd imagine if the wind was to severe they become at risk from falling over. Not unlike most tall objects in high wind. Also, If the blades are turning fast enough it would start to put a whole different set of forces into play. You might have wind turbines trying to take off etc. Either that or blades going flying or some such other accident. Makes sense to stop them if this is the case.

yes its true the wind turbine can be shut down for safety reasons (too windy)

I would suspect that since they are generating AC current at 60 cycles, generator speed is controled at all times.
