Because when you eat a good meal, (also called getting full) you need to fill up all the corners of your appetite (the square) so you can well, get a good meal. Now you can't just fill up circle of a square or a rectangle or a triangle so that's why. But why they picked a square, no one knows.
Ok, now that was the Internet talking in my little own summary. But if you want to hear what I say, read on.
Ok, I think that you need a certain amount of food for each dining. So they would call it a square meal. But like the Internet, no one knows. I just guess some started calling it that and it sort of caught on. But I do sort of think that they use the square shape for the certain amount of food we need each meal because it's a regular and common shape and that your meals should be the same or something. But hey, that just my thought.

It is called a square meal because it was a TV dinner and the plates are square.

I think it is because a square has 4 corners and that represents the 4 food groups - bread, meat, veg.,and dairy.
