It depends on your body and your wiring and your natural circadian rhythm.

When I was an infant, I always slept late in the mornings, but stayed awake really late into the evenings, long after my mother was exhausted from trying to get me to go to sleep. It's just how I was. When I was a child in school, I had a really hard time--my mother had to work really hard to get me out of bed, and I really was quite fuzzy headed for most of the morning. That pattern has stayed the same my entire life.

When I was in college I had no problems staying up late, or even all night, working on projects or papers, and the work I produced at night was of much better quality than that produced in the early part of the day or the early afternoon. I also always did better in classes which required a lot of class participation if I could get them later in the day. Finals were a real misery for me because the earliest slot was 0700-0900 hours, and I always had at least one of those every term. I also had early morning classes, not by choice, but because that's simply when they were offered. I just had a hard time--I am not at my sharpest then.

I start to really get a keen edge at about 1600-1800 hours, and I am at my best in the nighttime. I usually stay up all night and sleep late into the afternoon because I have insomnia anyway and have a heck of a hard time going to sleep.

I saw a sleep specialist for a while and he tried really hard to help me re-program my body clock. He had me get up at 0700 every morning. He promised that within three months, my body would regulate itself and I would begin going to sleep around 2230 or 2300. It did not work. I got up faithfully at 0700 every morning, and still went to sleep between 0300 and 0400 every morning. After three months of it, I was a wreck because of the enormous sleep debt, and the doctor conceded defeat. He said my rhythm is simply different. I am a night owl, and he doubts very much that will ever change.

So, I am more efficient in the evenings and late night/early morning hours. Others are on a more standard schedule and are really sharp in the AM. It all just depends on how your body is set up. Researchers used to be positive they could change it, and reprogram people, but they are starting to think it's more of a hardwired thing, and that they can't really change it, at least not permanently.

Depending on biorythyms it would be at the point of day when you are most alert. for me usually in the evening, or bright and early when I have been mulling something in my mind, and awake around 4:00 AM with a bright idea that I have to start writing down.

after I've been out of bed for about an hour or two. Late at night you may as well hang it up and after lunch all I want is a nap.

I have to agree with you, that is when I am laying in bed just thinking before I fall asleep. I usually think about what I need to do and what I did that I shouldnt have, stuff like that.
