Language is basically a living thing. It changes over time. We lost the "u" in many words years ago. That's not the only change. Words that had a z are slowly changing to have a s as in prize-Surprise. I just recently read a fasinating book called "The native tongue-English and how it got that way" by Bill Bryson. Its too early in the morning for me to quote the book. Brain isn't awake yet. If you get a chance, read the book. As far as the French go, no opinion.

Hello! It is "Americans!", not "American's".

American usage of English has been adapted for convenience, not correctness, and you can see evidence for that all over the place. It is a joke that Americans would test other people for their English skills when they want to come to the USA to study and sometimes even to seek a job.

As for the question about the French, America is actually obsessed with Europe, though nobody would really accept that. Europe is the #1 tourist destination for Americans and American people look up to Europe for anything considered "artistic". This riff-raff with the French is more a fallout of Iraq invasion politics than anything else!

More than a few words in the American language are actually American. look them up in the dictionary and it will give you the origin of the words. American is actually named after the person that discovered it.....Get this, it's not Christopher Columbus, but Amerigo Vespucci. Why do you think America is called the melting pot? We are a country that is blended from other countries and cultures.

We're not trying to beat the French. We've already saved their sorry butts. Who would want to be French anyways ?

Learn your own language first. American's is a possessive word, not plural.

We're "Americans", not "American's". If you're going to put us down for our spelling, which is correct in its own right, then at least get your punctuation right.
