They are not mutually exclusive. Both are co-dependent.

What is the internal nature of one's life? What kind of external nature would sustain a better life for all? It is not possible to choose one over the other.

They are interdependent from each other. Without nature i don't see life in it. Without life what is the purpose of nature. They are called the Natural Life.

In my view, life though highly complex and seemingly independent, is but a minuscule part of the Great Nature!!
