My fish died little over two weeks ago. I did a slight water change, and left the water as it was in the tank. I just realized that the filter is not connected properly. The part with the carbon and bio balls did not have any water passing through them since i changed the water. I know this has killed all the beneficial bacteria contained in them.
What do i do now? do i connect it and run it for a few more days, or is it safe for me to add some fish? I was planning on getting fish tomorrow, but now i'm not so sure.

Whenever a filter is of for more than 24 hrs you need to clean it before restarting it >the good bacteria you have in your tank and filter needs oxygen. When the filter goes down for an extended period of time the good bacteria die and anarobic bacteria take over. When you put this in the tank it is deadly to fish.

I notice that filters especially cannister that does not have water running through it accumulates Hydrogen Sulfide which is toxic to fishes, it gives off a smell like rotten eggs.

The nitrifying bacteria might starts to die once no more oxygenated water is pump through the filter but the longer the water is left in the filter the more anoxic bacteria will grow. Thats what causes the Hydrogen Sulfide.

Therefore if you have a cannister filter that have not been getting water flowing for more than 24hours, you should not attempt to run it anymore. Take it out and clean it completely.

They are probably getting a disease called shock which is when a fish moves from one habbitat to a new one and they are differant in areas like oxygen in the water and water temperature you changed the water on them and they went into shock you should always have the filter on unless you are cleaning the tank you shouldnt have turned it off for a week

Wash out the filter to clean it well before you do anything else. Once you have done that it will be ready to grow the new bacteria for your new fish. If you plan on having any more than a small betta in the tank I woudl suggest you doa fishless cycle on the tank before adding any fish. If you need more info on that or have other questions, feel free to email me.
