Fiction or Non-fiction?
For a good fictional work, I would say Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
For a good non-fictional work, I would say The Greatest Generation series, by Tom Brokaw

I just finished reading a great one called "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer and it was amazing. I've read alot of books, but this one is hands down the best I've ever read. I highly recommend it.

It depends on what kind of book you are looking for. Just facts about battles and technical stuff, or about the lives of the soldiers and other people involved? Two that I've enjoyed are:
The Greatest Generation
Band of Brothers

Catch-22...it captures the madness, insanity, and illogical nature of war perfectly
