I'm from Moyock, North Carolina, but currently I'm visiting in Toledo, Ohio. I love this place, it's cooler, more open and rural, and just a great place to me. Also, the thing I really love is the fact it's so much cheaper here, the housing, cost-of-living, and even gas! A 500k house in Moyock, you can find here for around 250k or less!
I'll get to the point. I'm gonna be a firefighter/paramedic so once i get my degree I can go just about anywhere. On the other hand, my gf wants to be an artist. She's looking into graphic design or Illustration, and perhaps cartooning and some fine art on the side.
She wants to stay in Moyock, but I need to find a way to talk her into this place. I need to know how well art careers do around in the Toledo area, and what the salary is.

So far, we havent found anything in the NE north carolina area and VA Beach.

I'm a little worried for her. Even though she might not find work in the place I live, she said she is willing to sacrifice aslong as she in near her family and near the ocean. She can just take a plane. She won't look at the big picture and all the benifits, she just looks at the few disadvantages.
So, I need some good info, to maybe see things my way a little more.
I want her to do the best she can in art, and I also want to live a great life. That may not happen in Moyock, and it's getting even more unlikely.

Move ! Get out of the midwest ! I live in Columbus, and if were void of any good art and humanities, I hate to see what Toledo is like. If you get my drift. Cleveland and Cinci are a bit better, however if you are trying to make a career.

RUN AS FAR AS YOU CAN FROM THE MIDWEST !!!!

I'm glad that you have discovered what many overlook about Toledo... a relatively low cost of living. And we are within a few hours drive to so many other great metropolitan areas. So even if our little bit of art and sports aren't enough for you, there's always something easy to get to.

I do want to warn you on the weather, though. As the saying goes, "if you don't like the weather... wait until tomorrow." It's really up and down (especially lately) and our summers are usually hot and humid. Winters can be mild, or sub-zero.

As far as the art careers go, I wouldn't say it's booming here. But there are definitely jobs to be had. And there is always freelance work - plenty of it. In the 25 years that I have been in the business, I have only been unemployed for one year, and then I freelanced to fill the gap (it could have been less time, but I took it easy and hung out with my kids for the summer).

The salary range is pretty wide. Probably anywhere from 20k - 60k for a graphic designer, depending on experience and the type of employer.

Best wishes on your exciting life decision!

Welcome to Toledo. I've lived here all my life. There's always the Toledo Art Museum who hires artists for work there, and there are plenty of art shops she can check out. Toledo is a great place to live and raise a family, it's a great midwestern city with friendly people and wonderful places to live. Hope you stay!!
