You can buy plug in ones, depending on the age you could get a USB or Serial external one, or you could use a PC Card one (PCMCIA). If you go into any computer shop they will be able to help you straight away.

That's hard to believe. What model of Dell / Windows version? What do you mean by "modem", Dial up modem, Network interface card or Wireless adapter?
Unless it's an antique, it should have one or two of these, at the very least.

Try using the dell driver they will have a software for the wireless modem.

Yes but the ones from DELL for your lappy will be expensive, try looking at places like this: http://www.hardwarezone.com/reviews/others/Aztechusb9800/usb9800.htm where the device is external and if it goes wrong, you replace it with a new on, sure its a pain but then it means that you can plug it into ANY PC as well as lappy.

As long as the modem is plugged into the router, you can connect to it. Doesn't matter if a PC is hard wired to it or not.

DONT USE A MODEM CONNECTION ON A DELL LAPTOP!!!!!!!!!!! If poss, use a router with a USB port connection!!!!!!
