My pain went away probably 5 minutes after I got the epidural, and I had no pain while pushing. The only pain was when the head crowned, but it wasn't that bad. The only downside to the epidural is that my legs were completely numb and couldn't support me, so I couldn't get up and walk at all, and after the birth I couldn't pee for a few hours.
By the way, I had a 4 1/2 hour labor, and went from 1 cm to 10 cm in that time and pushed MAX 5 times. Mine wasn't slowed down AT ALL by the epidural, and I got it at 3 cm.

I did feel some pain while my epidural was working. I went from 6 cm to 10 cm in 45 minutes, and the doctors finally said that I went so fast it couldn't "keep up." There was a lot of pressure while I was pushing, but not much pain. Other than that, I didn't feel a whole lot after I got the epidural!

I'm not really sure how an epidural works as for I've only gotten one once and it didn't work for me. They say that maybe I waited to long cause right after my water broke I went into active labor. So I would suggest if getting an Epidural get it early so that it works for you.

From what I've heard, it numbs for as long as the medication lasts. They have to top it up from the little tube that they leave hanging out your back. Then sometimes they let it wear off so you can feel enough to push. Then you go from nothing to agony in minutes. But if you can't feel when to push, then you can't push properly and delivery can take longer.
I researched epidurals for months before having my kids and after seeing all the evidence I decided against it as the complications arising from them and the chances of it resulting in c-section were far too high for my liking. I stuck to heat pads, showers, and pethedine at the end to get through it. I'm no saint and don't like pain and am not a 'pro natural childbirth' person but I don't think people give their bodies a chance to work it anymore and they don't research possible complications before they do it. If it works for you though, go for it!
Good luck and congrats

The doctor that administered my epidural gave me to much of a dose at first and so when it came time for me to start pushing I couldn't feel my contractions at all to push with them, so they had to turn my epidural off so I could feel them. It wasn't so bad pushing with the contractions plus all you can think of is getting that baby out. :)
Some women can feel the pressure as it's time to push and ect, but most of the time there is no real bad pain with the epidural.
