Matter can undergo a variety of processes.

If it is radioactive, it will decay and be converted nto some other element, without any external influence.

Otherwise, the environment has to do something for other processes to take place.

There are physical changes, such as freezing, boiling, breaking into smaller pieces.

And there are chemical changes, whereby the matter reacts with another substance and a totally new compound is formed.
