Botox is the poison that makes you ill when you get 'botulism', which is a type of food poisoning. The Botulinum organism invades your body's organs, and they are affected by the toxin it produces.

The poison paralyses muscles, which can kill you by interfering with your circulation and breathing. Scary.

Medically, paralysis is very useful because some (extreme or random) muscle contractions can cause problems (such as pain).

There isn't any danger that the toxin will interfere with other muscles than the ones it's injected into, because it's very quick-acting, and can't travel around your body very easily.

They just inject the toxin, NOT the Botulinum. So there's no danger of catching botulism from the injection.

Lots of people get the stuff injected into their face, so medics have had a lot of practice with it. (Sometimes, there can be a problem if it is injected in the wrong muscle (you dribble, or look sleepy), but it usually wears off in a few days.) With larger muscles (the ones in your face are pretty small), it's difficult to get it in the wrong one.

Try googling 'THERAPEUTIC BOTOX'.

('Therapeutic' means 'medical treatment', eg for pain. Botox is more famous as a cosmetic treatment; by relaxing your facial muscles, it can smooth your face out a bit.)
