Get them all scraped and stacked on the side of the sink. Clear off another surface to put them on when clean.
Wash in order of greasiness - start with glasses and go from there. Once draining board is full, dry that lot and stack on cleared surface. Start again with a fresh bowl of water!
Mind you, a dishwasher is easier!

I am a beleiver in hand washing, though my kind is fast disapppearing. Washing dishes up after every meal is the most efficient, but I find it also the hardest habit to practice. I often do the dishes just once a day. I have a double sink, so using a separate dishpan is not necessary, sink mats, though, are a good choice to keep glasses from breaking and grey streaks (from coming in contact with the metal sink).off the dishes.
Good china, crystal stemware, and pots and pans still should be washed by hand. The caustic dishwashing compounds can etch stemware over time and the heat from the drying cycle can crack fine china. Even restaurants have someone to wash up the pots and pans separately.
First I wash the glasses, then the cups, followed by any plasticware and then the plates, bowls, and larger serving pieces. Before changing the water, I'll wash up any smaller or non-stick pans and pots. Next I change the water so it's hot and clean (both wash and rinse) and soak the silverware and utensils fo about 5 minutes. Then I wash them up and let them soak int he rinse water for about the same time. This gives me time to wipe down the counters and appliances. This also heats up the utensils and silverware enough that they air dry on their own (I hate drying silverware). Next comes the rest of dishes (if any) and the pots and pans, soaking as needed.
I often add a tablespoon of bleach to the rinse water to help sanitize everything, it really seems to help especially in the cold and flu seasons. Never use more than a capful (about 2 tablespoonfuls) in the rinse water, otherwise it leaves a chemical residue on everything.
If washing up stored china and glassware before using it, add a couple of tablespoonfuls of washing soda INSTEAD of the bleach. It makes the glassware and dishes sparkle. Never mix bleach and washing soda together. Washing soda and bleach are both available with the laundry supplies. Keep them stored separately. Washing soda will make the dishes slippery when wet. be careful and let them air dry, if possible.
I keep a few select tools that help, all are readily available. They include a bottle brush, a nylon scrubber (for non-stick and dishes), a stainless steel scrubber (for metal pots and pans) and a small brush (made for coffee pots or cake decorating tips) for tight spots. For food stuck at the bottom of a jar, the nylon scrubber pad can be put in the jar and then moved around using the bottle brush.
I often play some sort of music while doing the dishes, it seems to make the job go faster, but then so does a helper to dry the dishes and put them away.

wash the biggest and greasiest dishes first - then you will have a confidence boost srtaignt away as you will see the load is disappearing quickly - this will give you the will to go on :-)
But if you are washing in a sink full of soapy water, and not in the running water - the best will be to start with dishes that are not very soiled - the water in the sink will last longer.
Wash them, then put aside till you finish everything. When everything is washed - rinse all of the dishes in clean water, then dry with a dish towel, so that yo ucan put it away immediatelly - because it's very unlikely that you will have a lot of space to let it dry naturally

No, not really, other than soaking the plates so you don't have to scrub them.
One of those boring things in life you just have to get on with.
