Oil has drained into the cylinder(s). Possible that the plug is fouled too. Take out the spark plug(s) and turn the engine over a few times to get excess oil out then put some gasoline in the cylinders and turn it over again without the plug in the cylinder. Clean the plug and reinstall. Fill tank with high octane for this one tank only and it should run now.

Wow, this past weekend I had to fix my son in law's Craftsman / Briggs & Stratton motor because he had filled the crankcase oil to the top of the fill tube.
In your case flip the mower and drain all the oil / gas you can from the tank. Go to an auto parts store or Walmart and pick up three things from the automotive dept: Two cans of Berrymans Carbuerator cleaner, a can of CRC brake clean and a new Quick start Champion spark plug.
When you get home remove the spark plug. Spray the carb cleaner into the spark plug opening and pull the starter rope several times to blow out the oil gas from the combustion chamber. Remove the air cleaner and spay the remainder directly into the throttle opening of the carbuerator while someone pulls the pull rope. With the other can of carb cleaner spray a liberal amount into the gas tank. Slosh it around and dump it out.
Repeat all the steps above with the can of CRC brake clean. This solution helps to dry out the gasoline, oil, and carb cleaner. Rope or wire tie the throttle open and let the carbuerator dry out and lleave the spark plug out for one hour.
Install the new Quick start Champion spark plug and fill the gas tank with fresh gasoline. The motor should start with a minimum amount of pulls.
I think the two fill caps on lawn mowers should be color coded so this tipe of accident doesent happen to more people.

First of all,(as you probably know by now) You do not mix the oil and gas in a 4 stroke engine (only on 2 strokers)You will have to flush the tank, lines and carb.with gasoline,as well change the spark plug,(instead if fooling around with cleaning the old one)It did not hurt the engine. It may take a while to start, but there should be no problems.

Oil in the tank will not hurt anything. Fill the tank with gas, it may smoke for a time or two. You can also squirt gas directly into the carb to keep it running while the oil cleans its self out of the lines. I dump a little oil in my tanks every winter.

Oil is in the carburetor and you might have to take it apart or at least the float chamber to get the oil out. Or take it back and act ignorant. Or try to start it a couple more times just maby there is gas diluting the oil. Check the spark plug to see that it is not oil covered and try again. Boy If that sucker starts up you will fog the neighborhood a couple minutes.

You should remove the gas tank, dump a little clean gas in swish it around then empty it.If oil got into the fuel system it should clean itself out. Probably best to clean fuel lines and carburater out manually.Make sure you have good spark, good fuel flow, and all safety devices are activated if such devices are so equipped. Finally make sure if there is an on/off switch it is turned on.(check starting and operating instructions)

Anything is possible, but this scenario is unlikely. Check plug for fouling, make sure the flywheel brake is operating correctly, put fresh gas into tank, and try again.
This may or may not help, but if it is brand new, and your problems continue, return and exchange it for another. Good Luck.

you should pull out the spark plug and clean it . it could have oil on it which will keep it from sparking. anytime the spark plug gets wet it will not fire so check out the plug before doing anything else.
