I’m a very zealous cyclist and enjoy taking on difficult challenges. My friend, Yin and I take the same route to work, which is a quiet rural road. There is a stretch of a 3 mile straightway, so I’m wondering if it is possible to outrun her car?

Postscript: My friend, Yin drives a 2002 Honda Civic DX, with a 1.7L, 115 horse power engine and a 4-Speed automatic transmission.

To pass on my thanks, I’ve temporary placed a photo page for your viewing. Please comment.

It's hard to say who would win. If the entire route is a three mile straight rural road, she will cream you if there is no traffic and you start at the same time.
To put the challenge more in your favour, look for a flat route with short cuts and a lot of peak hour traffic congestion, you want to have a route where you can average a higher speed than she can. ;)

Kate, I can honestly say I was unable to retreive your photos, as for your being able to out run your friends car on your bicycle well I would have to honestly say no. It might only be a small 1.7L engine but ask yourself, do you think, you can out run 115 horses. You might be able to out run one on your cycle, but the force of 115 well think of it this way 2500 rpm's say her motor is turning, that's aprox. 65mph more or less. 2500rpm's,... that's 41.7 revolutions per second or each time the piston goes up and down, you can't batt you eyes that fast. You wouldn't even be able to see the movement of the piston, say the cylinders were transparent. Something to think about. :) Do you think you can out run that car. Yes I do agree todays bicycles are very fast and no doubt YOU are in great shape ( really would have liked to seen your pix) and I do think it is entirely possible with the right gearing and posture on the bicycle, wind, road conditions, slope or grade it is possible to outrun a car but in the long run (3 miles) probably not. That my dear, is my honest, opinion. Good luck and good cycling.

Anything is possible. You just have to pick the course. With a 3 mile straight a way. She should blow your doors off.

You need a twisty road where you can take shortcuts that the car can't go thru. You can't bear her with speed, you have to beat her with distance. Cover less ground to make up the time. If you can't do that, then buy a motorcycle and just outrun her. good luck with the chase.

It is possible for you to outrun her car, but it is a certainty that you will end up in worse condition, if you have a collision with her or another motor vehicle.
Road racing should only take place on a well defined and securely restricted track. Always wear proper head protection.
