No, it would absolutely not be better if it ended happily. The whole ship sinking is tragic enough, but it all just seems ok if Rose and Jack live happily ever after. The only way you can appriciate what those people (the Titanic passengers) went through, is if you feel some sadness at the end. Otherwise you're just watching a big boat sink for you entertainment.

It's The Titanic for God's sake. How could there possibly be a happy ending? No sinking? Wouldn't be the same if you ask me. Not all movies are supposed to be happy.

No, the ending is as it was meant to be. Sometimes people meet and fall in love quickly but it doesn't necessarily last. The character of Rose went on to have many adventures in her life and that is due to Jack. If you believe in an after life, then the scene where he is waiting for her on the staircase, should be enough of a happy ending.

The boat sank and over a thousand people lost their lives. How could it possibly have a happy ending? Or are you referring to the fake love story of the movie?

well just think...if the ship hadn't sunk in 1912, there wouldn't have even been a movie. it would have been just any old ship crossing the atlantic.
