The flooding over the weekend took out about 6 foot off the sides of our bridge. There is just enough for a vehical to pass. We live on a dead end private road, with it being the sole way in and out for our neighbors and ourselves. It is a gravel road with a 36 inch tin horn. From the top of the bridge to the creek bed is about 15' deep. If we loose one more foot of road we'll be shut in. Is there any assistance we can get? We're tring to get the county to take it over so the school bus can come down and pick up our kids. If that doesnt work are there any programs with soil conservation, fema that we could try? Who should we contact for assistance?

Oh dear! I feel for you as the houses around where I live are also private roads and with all teh rains we've had in Texas this spring & summer, they are a mess.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for help from the county. If Oklahoma is like Texas, private roads have to be brought up to the county's standards before the county will take them over & that is a very expensive proposition. Seeing as you're living on a gravel road, I would doubt that your road is up to county road standards.

If your county has been declared a disaster area because of the rains & flooding, you will be able to contact FEMA (don't laugh, they do give out $$$$) for assistance.

If not, the burden is on you & the others living around you to open your checkbooks and pay for someone to fixe the road and the bridge.

You payed to live on a private road and now you want public funds to repair it? In most areas of the country you have to maintain your private road and bridge to minimal county standards before the county can or should maintain it. You should form a homeowners association, get a loan for repairs and then petition the county to take possession, but then it becomes a public road. You can't have your cake and eat it too. RScott

Private or public, you pay your taxes. It is a road! Keep bugging the county...if that doesn't work, I like the idea of contacting the media. Nobody wants to be bashed on TV or in the newspapers so that usually gets something going.
We have lived on "private" dirt roads & the county always used road graders to keep them accessible. School buses need accessibility.... make a fuss!
Good luck! =)

you should petition the town to have it become part of the public road system this way these tradedies in the future will not be so exapnsive
as a private road do you all maintain insurance.
hope you do to get repairs done.
