It seems to me that people are too extremist about it. What's wrong with combining certain schools of thought to find a system that works?
A lot of countries are basically capitalist, but with a bit of socialism thrown in so that the poor are taken care of and will get adequate health care and can eat.
Remember, capitalism is dependent on SOMEONE being poor, it's not just a character flaw. Somebody has to fill that role. I think if we're going to have a system which puts certain people at the bottom, the least we could do is make sure they're not starving, or unable to afford medicine.
Yet people think any ounce of socialism is a slippery slope to communism. That's crap. Look at other Western developed nations. There are more welfare benefits and universal health care, which is not just for the lazy, it's for the working poor- people who just do not earn quite enough (again, there will ALWAYS be these people). So everyone does pay more tax, but that doesn't mean they can't get rich, reap the rewards of hard work and make a good life for themselves if they have skills and talent. I think you have to be unbelievably selfish to think your "right" to get obscenely rich (as opposed to just rich) should be at the expense of the worker's rights to food, health care and adequate housing.
It's not always perfectly executed, but nor is any government.
Anyway, bottom line, it is not all or nothing. Governments can combine elements from every political system, and it can work. It doesnt have to be a slippery slope.

Capitalism is the best coverup of the enslaving of humanity.
Why do we work 40 hours a week for 50 years for a company? Just to survive.... is our technology that poor, that we have such an inefficient system in place. The very basis of money is on some elusive theoretical concept of economies.

What is the better system? You question that we should know it, present it to us. Capitalism has proven to be the best system. It allows for opportunity and upward mobility. It does not however reward laziness and the lack of motivation. Capitalism offers the opportunity to expand and change inside of the system. You are not forced into any one industry or made to have any one job. You have the flexibility to market yourself and an opportunity to flourished based on the hard work of others through investment. Those who would complain about capitalism lack motivation and determination. The opportunity is there and the needed tools are availiable - they may not be simply placed in your hand, but they are there.

My beliefs in economics come from education and experience. Free enterprise is the only economic system that works. It is therefore the only system that all countries should adopt. Mankind has a written history that extends back over 5,000 years. That should be enough for any reasearcher looking for results of economic systems.
The word "capitalism" is a pejoritive invented by Karl Marx to denegrate free enterprise. We all know by now that Karl's ideas belong in the toilet.

No, I don't believe that we are. Instead of being blind, open your eyes and see what's happening in other countries where Socialism is practiced and talk to people (NOT on this forum) who live there and experience it.
I think there are many improvements that can be made with our present system, but instead of eliminating things that work, work and come up with ideas to implement that make things better and not worse.
Socialism is only one step away from Communism and this country is rapidly headed in that direction.
