After the events of September 11, 2001 put the 'war on terror' at the forefront of international politics, it seems the issue remains a favorite fallback for politicians starting out on the long road that they hope will end at the white house.
US candidates who have learnt from the example set by President George W Bush that creating an 'external' enemy is a good way to create sense of paranoia.
do you agree?

I think that you give too much personal credit/blame to Bush. I am astounded that so many educated people call him the stupidest president ever, yet, ascribe to him diabolical plans and cry "He duped us".Which is it? Is he so terrible?or are you frustrated? The alternatives Gore and Kerry ...have they continued to work for the causes you want? maybe but my core issue was abortion,I voted my heart.
And yes,He is the least articulate of politicians, but he is not the master mind behind everything you are upset about. Lets at least be accurate. Gore is free to do the work for the environment that he has focused on. Kerry I haven't seen or heard about.
Bush and all the other politicians are the sum total of our society and what we allow.I frequently ask people with very strong opinions "did you vote" almost all say no.If you don't vote every time,Don't talk. If you did vote try to remember why past elections reaped the bozos, because they appealed to the largest group voting.I don't feel that Bush needs to do anything to ramp up fear, Have you flown lately?.Looked sideways at a middle easterner, complained of the war? These are the things keeping Americas' attention. Every time a bombing on our turf occurs,That feeds paranoia, and by the way we do have an external enemy.

Yes, but at least invade and stay in the country that terrorized you. Iraq, nor no Iraqi, had anything to do with 9/11. That's all about oil and making money for Halliburton. I hate it when politicians try to insult my intelligence. Barack Obama is right. Go get Osama Bin Laden even if you have to go into Pakistan which is where intelligence says he is now. He really was responsible for 9/11. Not Iraq, but it was a convenient diversion for Bush & Cheney. What is it with those 2? Don't they have enough money already? I turn the TV off whenever the face of Bush appears on it now. He's so not smart (and that's to put it nicely) that he isn't aware that the American people know he duped us.

Sept . 11 was not staged. It was the beginning of a long process in the United States dealing with a threat. Is it important, the answer is yes. we did not create this threat, it came to us. Ignoring the existence of a threat was tried in the 90's be another President. That plan did not seem to work so well. The reality is that the Islamic fascist extremist want us dead, we cannot and should not ignore it and hope that it goes away.

Adolph Hitler was using that method to perfection long before it became fashionable in US politics.

By demonizing the Jew, Hitler could not only easily create a common enemy, he had an enemy right there for everyone to see every day.

But yes, I agree with you.

I don't think Bush created it. Did you miss the recent London terror? Did Bush create or imagine that, too?

Is John Edwards a slow learner? He claims it's just a bumper sticker, there is no war (he said that right before the London terror activity).

I totally disagree with you. Terroists like Osama Bin Laden and his ilk started mahem many years ago. It is the main responsibility of the government to protect the citizens of the country. I want Presidents and candidates who will keep protection the top priority.
Conservatives are strong on homeland security. Liberals are notoriously weak on fighting terrorists and weak on supportint the military.
Anyone who does not recognize the terrorists for what they are, murderous thugs, is deluding himself. My choice for President is the person who says: "I will do everything possible to protect the citizens of the US and will fight terrorists to the last man."

yep. Scare the people into submission. That's how Hitler did it.

Just switch on AM radio...the fear mongering is endless.

It is really a shame that we will turn into a fascist police state that easily...I thought more people would realize what is going on...that more people payed attention in history class. I thought more people weren't so gullible that they would listen to lying politicians.
