i'm 17 weeks pregnant. when the doctors feel my stomach and do ultrasounds they press quite hard into my stomach, not for it to hurt but for it to be uncomfortable. i just wondered whether there was any possible chance that feeling your uterus or feeling for the baby with your hands could cause any potential risks to the fetus? i'm sure there isn't but i just wanted to be sure. thanx

I'm not an expert but can reassure you that I am sure they are not oing anything to hurt your baby. I am 20 weeks and even in the ultrasound I was prodded, not too hard, but a bit to get the baby to move and he did on screen and didn't seem bothered. My doctor actually showed me how to press down on my stomach to feel the top of my uterus and again, while uncomfortable, I know she wouldn't do it if it were wrong and I trust her 100%.

Don't worry, babies are made of flesh and bones so you can't squash them like bugs. And they are well protected by the muscles of the uterus and the amniotic fluid. Also they respond to pressure by moving or kicking back so they are not totally defenseless. My first daugther is 4 and is not very careful around my belly so my baby (33 weeks pregnant) gets an occasional bump or two but I am sure she is fine.

They are just feeling for the top of the cervix and around the baby and it won't hurt it at all. It is surrounded in that wonderful amniotic sac to protect it. If you are feeling uncertain about it when they do it and uncomfortable, just mention it and say I was wondering why you have to push so hard? They will tell you and reassure you that all is fine.

Good luck and congrats!

definatly not.
they press down that hard so they can feel your uterus because your early pregnancy your utuerus is very small you may not think so but it is still tucked in pelvic region.

amniotic fluid is one of the best things, it keeps your baby safe, like it was in a non popable bubble

it is normal, they only want to check the size of your fetus.
