Irrigation refers to providing water to a plant by artificial means. See the first reference for an overview. Salt (sodium chloride) in high concentration is a toxic salt to most plants, Thus, people usually want to prevent its buildup or leach it out, rather than add more. It is fairly common to use an irrigation system to apply fertilizer along with the water. As you can imagine, there's a huge body of literature about feeding plants. Visit your local library and look through books on farming and gardening.
