Traditionally, it was because women were expected to reign in the less moral men. It was thought that men "just couldn't help" their behavior because they were more ruled by emotions and hormones. Women were seen as the strength behind the men and the anchor of the home. Anyone out there remember being told it was up to you to decide how "far" things would go in a relationship as a teen? This idea was (and is) based on the idea that women are more motivated by "purer" emotions like love versus the "lust" men typically experience as teenagers. I'm not making a judgment if this is true or not. So no one bite my head off here. Just stating what I think the phrase meant. =-)

Because according to tradition men and women are considered "one" when they get married. My guess is that somewhere along the way some guy decided to pay his wife a huge compliment and call her the better half.
I don't know if it really means anything to anyone these days, but I know it sure feels nice when my husband calls me that. Makes me feel like I'm doing something right.

In a couple the wife is called 'better half' because she is better than her husband in making the house a 'home' as a husband can well get all amenities but not amour in the family.

in a couple wives are called the better halves since they are normally caring in nature and they have lots of patience

I was never able to figure this one out. Even when I was little.....it just never made any sense to me. My issue was always the same.....why is either partner considered 1/2 of a person?? Don't you want a whole person??? I don't want 1/2 of a man..........it means he is not whole or complete.......

idk the woman makes the man who he is (if shes a good women and if hes a good man) of course, but rly its only an opinion, men are no better then women and women are no better then men, we are all equal this is how things should be
