Yes, I believe we all have alter-egos;
the vast majority of us just never realize this phenomenon when it actually occurs. Clever observation
from you and a completely brilliant question as well. This is one of the better and more original questions I've had the pleasure of participating in for
quite some while. You've earned a star from me. Keep up the creative geniuses.

No. I always know who I am, and which version of myself I am expressing.

I know very well who I am, but I also know that, for many people, I am difficult. I don't mean difficult as mean or nasty. I just have a very strong personality, and coupled with some other things about me, I can just be too strong for some people's comfort. Accordingly, there are times when I express a different, gentler, sort of watered-down version of myself for the comfort of others.

There's also another time when I do it, and that's when I am with my husband, and it's his time to shine. We both have such strong personalities that if we are both being fully expressive, it ends up with one of us dimming the light of the other one, or with us just being so much ourselves that we blow people away. Sometimes he takes the supporting role, and sometimes I take it. We just went to the 25th reunion of his high school graduating class this weekend. My job wasn't to be completely me. It was to be his wife, and let him stand out. That doesn't mean that the person people met wasn't the real me--I don't change who I am for anyone. I simply turned down the wattage a bit, so that his light could be the bright one. When people wanted to really get to know me, I turned it back up, and fully expressed myself, but for the majority of people, it was enough to just get a taste of me, and have him as the main course.

Does that make sense?

I used to have what you have asked above happen, though not very often. It happened more when I was young, especially when I was a teenager. That's when people are still trying on personas, and trying to find out who they are. Sometimes I was not quite on target--just a little off the mark. Once I found the true me, I stuck with her. I figured if I let her wander away too much or too often, I might not find her again, so I stayed where I was. I have been there ever since.

say what?
do you mean that I quote someone else in my everyday speech? occasasionally I do.

If I were a cartoon character with a cloud above my head where I could write that phrase, then I would include a footnote of where I got that comment. Otherwise I have no place to include a footnoot when speaking.

Than that mean i would have two of myself?
But than that would also means that myself that
appears to be myself is not really myself so i would
be lying to myself about be being myself that appears to be
myself or i'm just not being myself so i'm acting like someone
else and trying to make that myself when its not myself.
Is that right...?
