Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer was an army officer who, in a panic, ordered his men to open fire on the crowd. The firing lasted for ten or fifteen minutes. The crowd were in an enclosed space and could not escape. It is not clear how many were killed. Estimates vary from 379 to 2000.

The real motivator in the incident was Sir Michael O’Dwer, the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab.
