Because health & welfare are sensitive issues to many people and so therefore many people would like this to remain confidential. To have to ask this question I assume u would not care if your personal details were published to the wider world.

Because people need to know they are safe in revealing what may be embarrassing facts to their health providers.
Here is an example. A man goes to the mental health clinic stating he wants help to stop hurting his wife...the clinic reports this to the police...the man is arrested for spouse abuse...he then refuses to make any statement to the police on the advice of his solicitor...he gets off because he was under mental strain at the time as proved by his seeking help at a mental health centre.... the mental health counsellor is reluctant to be forthcoming in statements as they are concerned about the provider-patient relationship...the man leaves court without conviction and resolves never to seek help to keep from hurting his wife.
Also if a person has AIDS and it is not kept confidential it could have drastic effects on their life so many would not seek testing or treatment.
These are just a couple of examples

Confidentiality is very important because as healthcare workers our ability to correctly diagnose and treat our patients depends on getting a correct medical and social history, and having our patients trust us. If a patient thought that we were going to blab their whole heath history to the world they would not give us the truth. They also would not tell us important information such as drug use if they thought we would report them to the police. Without that information we might make the wrong diagnosis and/or not treat something such as pain well enough (drug users require significantly more pain meds for relief then non drug users). We also need our patients to trust us so that they will participate in their treatment (taking their meds, doing their exercises and breathing treatments). I hope that helps!

Because people do not want the fact that they have piles or a venereal disease made public. Would you?
And if this is in answer to an essay topic (which it probably is) include factor like patience relationship, confidence in the practitioner etc.

in healthcare people put their trust in you and tell you things that they wouldn't tell anyone else i have worked in a hospital/secure unit for the mentaly ill and part of the treatment is the patient being able to talk freely about anything with out the extra worry of anyone else knowing--you wouldn't want you're doctor chatting about you're illness's to everyone in the local pub would you?

How would you feel if you had been in hospital for something really nasty and you didn't want anyone to know?
