People who are envious, jealous, and who gossip and talk badly about others have an unhappiness within themselves. When people gossip or say hurtful things about others, it usually makes them feel better about themselves (a temporary feeling) for making someone else look bad or tearing someone else down. Sometimes the hurtful talk is due to ignorance or putting someone else down who is different from themselves. Jealousy and envy are rooted in not feeling good about yourself, that you want something someone else has and that you may hate that person for having what you don't have.

Well, that is a brief explanation...hope I answered your question.

As long as it is not obsessive it is a natural human defence mechanism!

It is what helped to raise mankind above the animals.

Gossiping is an exchange of information. It keeps people abreast of such things as which men and women are paired together (prevents fighting), Who has a problem like a disease (keeps you away from infection), who has a violent nature (saves you getting beaten). I could go on but I am sure you get my drift.

Gossiping also gives people a chance to measure their thoughts and ideas against the actions and ideas of others. This allows them to discuss the differences and if necessary adjust their thinking so gossiping is healthy in moderation.

The healthy attitude is to look at dogs and other animals. If they are uncertain of their place in the pack, pride or other grouping they are unhappy and at risk of fights for status and position in the group. Once they know their position, even if it is last they are much safer and more contented.

Envy in a sensible form is also healthy as it indicates a value systems and targets to strive for.

What is not healthy is if either gossiping or envy goes to far. Real gossips become a laughing stock to those around them and are greatly mistrusted. Real envy leads to dissatisfaction with their lot in life.

For they know no better

The only way to stop gossip is to confront the person and ask them why?

If you have someone gossiping to you about someone else ask them why are they doing it?

I think if you point it out after a while it will settle or even stop

However on the other hand people thrive on gossip and are very loss without it : (

people want to feel like they have information on someone else to share and thus thinking that they are getting the person they are gossiping to to like them and to look down on the other person or to laugh at them, some are trying to be funny, some are malicious, some do it out of false concern but all do it for attention, envy, well that is just jealousy by another word.

Some people just have to be the ones to know something. Some just want to tear people down because it makes them feel better about themselves. I stopped hanging with an old friend over that. He had all kinds of negative things to say about me when I wasn't around. It's just a way to talk down on what you do and hope someone else agrees or puts their two cents in.

I don't know it just how they were brought up. There's always gossip, or something to gossip about. I usually keep to myself sometimes, i usually don't like to gossip about other people. It just makes us human. Some just like talk down to others, like the other person just said, it makes them feel better about themselves, that they didn't do that.

I can only tell you why I do it. I am insecure. If someone is something I want to be or has something I want I try to destroy it either verbally or physically. Why? when I do that I feel better about myself. When I see them miserable my self esteem goes up.
