So many places to go and things to do and see in Melb. if you like Italian food you have got to go to Lygon Street in Carlton, great restaurants and good shopping. Its only a short tram ride from Swanston street, Hardware lane is also a great place place to eat and be seen. For night life in the CBD try Manchester Lane (just off little Collins)
Beautiful gardens surround the CBD, there's Federation Square, the Block arcade, the Burke Street Mall where there is a tourist information booth, go to the QV where there is the best chocolate place called Bennans (I think thats what its called) walk across the Swanston street bridge or though Flinders Street station over to South Bank, maybe take a quick ferry ride on the Yarra, or walk down a little further to the casino. There is also terrific Chinese and other asian crusine in little china town. You will never get bored in Melbourne. There are also many historical places in the CBD eg. Old Melb. gaol, The Mint, many of the arcades like the block have beautiful tile work and architure, worth walking through and looking up to the ceilings or down to see the great tile work. The immigation museum is very interesting as is the Melb. library

Federation Square (free entertainment, restaurants & bars); pubs, cafes & restaurants everywhere throughout the city (particularly, wander through the lanes where you'll find hidden treasures - check out Degraves St as a starting point); Crown complex has a casino (which I hate, but there's loads of other stuff there too); Melbourne Aquarium is excellent; Melbourne Museum is brilliant; Bennett's Lane jazz club is a Melbourne institution; China Town in Little Bourke St; National Gallery at the Arts Centre; the food court in David Jones (department store) is divine; Half Tix at Melbourne Town Hall sells cheap theatre tickets and there's always something worth seeing; cinemas and great shopping everywhere. A short walk from the city - Lygon St has loads of Italian restaurants; Brunswick St is interesting & quirky; Botanical Gardens. Tram trip to Ackland St, St Kilda - especially on the weekend - is worth doing. The nightlife in the city has come alive in the last few years - you won't be bored. And it's very safe. There's an information centre at Federation Square and they'll give you maps and tell you what's on in the city - worth visiting the info centre first to find your feet. Have a great time... Melbourne is gorgeous.
