I would recommend you getting the latest Intel Duo 2 Core T7000 series. Please get a minimum T7300 which is a duo core processor running at 2GHz, with 4MB Cache, and a Front side bus of 800MHz. In other words, it is fast!
Also, do make sure the notebook comes with at least 2Giga bytes of DDR3 RAM!
And, to enable you to do 3D Editing and stuff, do get the best 3D Accelleration graphic cards that money can buy.
Or in your case, within your budget.
I would recommend you to get the NVidia GeForce cards. Do make sure, it comes with at least 512MB of non-shared video RAM!.
If you are on a budget, getting the Mobile Radeon ATI 2000 series would be good too.
Do not get an integrated graphics card. They are cheap but not worth it.
The above will be good enough as a basic requirements when searching for notebooks.
Of course, you should get at least 14.1inch TFT/LCD screen for your viewing pleasure.
Choose wisely from the many range of HP and Gateway PCs.
I recommend looking at HPs.

For the price you're looking at you'll have a hard time finding something that can handle 3D work well.

I'd say go with a Turion and try to get nVidia or aTI graphics. Whilst the Intel processors are in general better they also cost more and the cheap laptops with Intel processors all have crappy 3D chips.

Dell Inspiron XPS M1710 but this about $2,300 Desktop replacement and gaming laptop.Reviews say the Dell XPS M1710 is a fantastic laptop for 3D gaming. What's good for games is also good for office multitasking and video editing, with an Intel Core Duo processor up to 2.33GHz, a top-of-the-line graphics card, up to 4GB RAM and a beautiful 1920 x 1200-pixel 17-inch widescreen display. The Dell laptop's screen has a glossy coating that boosts brightness. Reviewers like the screen, but you could get some glare under office lighting. If you're considering the Dell XPS for work, check out the screen before you buy. This laptop is powerful, but not very portable since it weighs more than 9 pounds. I suggest that you should save up your money and buy this one.

I know those are the choices you are looking at, but I would go with a dell. I would really take the time to learn about the different features and products before buying a laptop. Spend a good couple of months prior to buying. Goodluck! ' )

Heyz.. for 3d and video editing what you need is a laptop with a good and dedicated memory graphics card. Processor is important as well but in your case the GPU (video card) is more important..

1 gb ram minimum.. Increase your budget a bit and you can get a decent lappy..

Hmm. Apple computers, Mac's to be specific, have great reviews. They are less likely to come in contact with viruses because well, to be frank, most viruses are geared towards Windows. Mac's are more expensive, however it is definatelty worth it in the long run. My cousin actually just purchased a MacBook, she has had it for about a day and she already knows the ropes!
