By far the best one I have ever used is the Spade anchor! Check it out on www.spade-anchor.com

The type and size of the anchor that you use is based on the size and wieght of your vessel, depth of water, water conditions, and most important the make up of the bottom (rock, clay, mud).

A very good all purpass anchor is the Danforth type. It holds very well in sandy, mud, clay, and mixtures of the same.

There are many different types of anchors each has it own ups and downs. You should really consult someone at the marine store before making your purchase or at least another boating friend in the same area as you.

Another thing to consider is anchor line and rode, and how much you should have. Typical conditions call for 5 to 7 times the amount of line per foot of water depth for optimal holding power. And possibly a little more if the conditions go sour.

Purchase a nautical chart of the area that you will be boating in to find out the makeup of the bottom that you will be anchoring in. Charts will definately help you out with more than just anchoring too.

I will place a couple of links to help you with your anchor search and help you learn more.

Anchors can be expensive, but, it money well spent to buy a quality anchor. Also, it not hurt to have two, one for a backup. Sometimes you may not get your anchor back.
The "Danforth" is a good anchor. Most have a place to connect a second "Rode" (Rope) and just attach a float so if it get stuck you can pull your "Release" line (The one with the rope attached with a float).
The links many help you learn more as the anchor is important, it good to know as much about them as you can.

I get you this too. You need to know how to tie good knots. The first has video and the second pictures.

when anchoring in the whitsundays ALWAYS check with the locals. Some anchors are ILLEGAL on the reefs and you can incur VERY HEAVY FINES for using the wrong type
