Would suggest if you place the tank near some sunlights as natural lights helps the fish to produce vitamins and as well enhanced the colours of the scales and bases.
By doing this you need to have an algae eater/pleco/flagged prochilodus/kissing prochilodus to help with the possible algae growth on the tank wall

freshwater or saltwater, but since your new im guessing freshwater.
look at this video from youtube, it shows from practical fish keeping, them setting up a professional freshwater tank.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xWdH4APC7Dg
They also have a video of setting up a saltwater tank if needed.
For TEXT info, try looking into fishprofiles.com which is a wide world fish forum, which has articles about setting up tanks.
