It does sound like the sound card may have been damaged. Try going into the device manager and see if the sound card shows up there.

Right click on my computer
Go to properties
Click on the hardware tab
Go to the device manager.

If there is a yellow exclamation mark by the sound card, or it doesn’t show up it may be damaged, try reinstalling the drivers from Dell's support site (support.dell.com).

Have you tested the speakers on another computer?

The power surge could have blown the speakers.

If the speakers work on another computer, your sound card may be at fault.

First take note of sound card model and manufacturer and installed drivers.

Do a google/yahoo search for drivers for your sound card (make sure you download the correct ones for your Operating system). Save the drivers in a location you will easily find them.

Then un-install the sound card drivers.

Restart the computer and let the system find your new hardware.

Check the drivers; if they are the correct one, try your sound - it should work. If it does not, you will have to replace your sound card.

Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, check that audio device has not suddenly been muted.

Otherwise, the audio chip is probably blew.
