Is it even hard to do something politically shady. Are there already alot of watchdogs and dirtdiggers from other parties that make it hard for them to do wrong.

What are politicians doing these days to actively show they have nothing to hide? What are they doing to change the opinions of their jaded constituents and citizens in general.

If you think the politicians are honest and trustworthy then you are sadly mistaken. The first thing they do to get elected is to lie. Whoever makes the grandest lie and makes it look real gets elected. I remember going to a Democratic rally and hearing President Clinton talk about putting a computer in every school room. Never happened. The second thing they get elected is to ask for money. Do you think you donation of $100 or even $1000 makes a dent in their campaign budget? When you have to ask somebody for millions of dollars to finance a campaign you are also owning a favor to that somebody that you can be darn sure that somebody is going to collect one day. Do the favor, get paid for the next campaign. It is what I call legal Bribery

A good trick is to look up any info on them on the Internet. If that had been done by voters pre-2000 things might be different.
