im looking to bild a book shelf but instead of shelfs 2 crome pipes going across and hanging up suits there what is a better wood to use birch or oak

both are fine woods if you use a good design. oak is harder and a little more durable but birch will stand up well also

Oak is certainly more plentiful, and probably less expensive. I suspect DURABILITY isn't strictly an issue however. It's a shelving/hanging unit; not prone to getting beat up.

Birch has a finer/tighter grain, and I can't say I've ever seen Milled Birch in bookcase size planking.

Oak would be far the easiest, you can find this at any DIY store. To find Birch you need a lumber yard.

oak is better and stronger, but for this type of job, birch would be the most sensible.

I personally prefer Oak wood, i find its sturdier...

oak is stronger, and birtch is prettier, oak is a more practical solution.
