Seriously. The mega millions this week is almost 200. How is all of this money made up? From people buying the tickets? Couldn't all of that money go to a greater good, like the military, hospitals, people with diseases, or even overseas to help countries with famine? That's an awful lot of money to pour onto some people. I know that it can be divided up if a lot of people win but seriously, we're looking at almost 200 million dollars. I'm not saying that those people aren't going to make good choices with their money, some do. But it just seems like some people who win don't deserve it. Any opinions?

Thanks for the answers guys. Some of them were not what I was expecting. Sean, I don't know why you are being so defensive about this subject, it wasn' asked to start a debate. You tell me that I'm not too bright but you're the one that can't even spell and make proper sentences. I guess we all can't be sean, the supposedly smartest person ever.

Without there being the big payout people wouldn't buy lottery tickets. The amount the government brings in from the tickets is greater than the amount given out as payouts, the difference gets put into things like schools.
Without the reward.. the schools would get nothing.

Why would anyone want to buy a lottery ticket in the first place if there was no prize for entering? If there was a zero percent chance of winning anything, why would anyone bother to buy a ticket? If people stop buying, then the states stop getting any proceeds they made by running the lottery.

I'm not sure of the exact amount, but I do believe 35-45% of the lottery goes to the government through taxes before it is rewarded to the winner. I do believe the money should be spread around. There is no need to have it all. 5 Million is enough. Poor countries need it more than Americans. Athletes and celebrities get paid too much. Ask about that.

First off, only a portion of each lottery ticket sold goes to the jackpot. The rest is used by the state for whatever it wants to use it for (in my state, it goes to helping to support the elderly).
Furthermore...who would bother buying a lottery ticket if there was no prize? Without prize support, no one would buy a lottery ticket. And then no one would benefit at all. Without a prize, no one would buy the tickets. With no one buying the tickets, the state would lose a large amount of weekly revenue.

I almost laughed. But OK seriously; if a person didn't have a "chance" of winning they wouldn't shell out a dollar to play. There would be no pool of money to fund schools or whatever the States use the proceeds for.

well in New Mexico at least, the state I'm living in now,at least part of the money does go to the state scholarship fund. Even when I do win, I feel good enough that a part of the money is going to help some deserving kids' education!

it's the prospect of having a lot of money that induces individuals to buy lottery tickets. buying a lottery ticket is irrational (because of the odds against winning) but it's also a self-interested act. people don't buy lottery tickets to be altruistic.

Well, why do people gamble? Go to movies? Buy things they really don't need?
You are asking people who already pay taxes to voluntarily donate to the rest of the programs, I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon.
