Torture is violence, no matter what form is used. But one "quieter" form of torture would be having drops of water dropping steadily onto a shaved spot on someone's head (the Chinese water torture).

The most commonly used form of torture in our society is employed by both abusive spouses and cult leaders. They deprive their victims of sleep or food while spending hours, or even days, accusing them of being worthless, evil, or of having participated in acts that occurred only in the abuser's mind, until the victim "admits" the "crime" and is either forgiven, or punished, or both.

I know that when I was a teenager, we often had to come home late at night, and would go to bed and be gotten up at about 2:00 am to clean the entire house, then had to go to school the same morning! That's just one true example I have.
