So, my friend and I was loading a solid wood door onto the top of her jeep and it slipped and landed on my thumb (smashed it bad). It was numb for about an hour. It's swollen (double it's normal size) and it's got a decent knot and bruise on it. Doesn't hurt as long as I don't move it (although my palm and wrist are killing me!) but if I move it, it hurts pretty bad.
Think it's broken??

Get to the ER and let them get an exray. I wish I'd done that
many years ago, thinking I had only sprained it really bad. And
it was so swollen and throbbing. And it took a week to go
down and was all black and blue. And it never was straight
again and now I have trouble using three fingers on that hand
on each side of the one that I thought just got sprained. Only
an exray can provide you with the info you want. Even a
doctor can't always tell by looking. Unless something is
poking out. Better safe than sorry anyday. See the ER for
fast action.

It sounds like you might have broken it. Then again it could just be a sprain. With it being swollen real bad with a knot on it and it hurts when you move it and it also hurts your hand and wrist then yes I would say you broke it. Go to Er or Dr and have a x-ray done. Then they should be able to give you something for the pain. DO NOT use the thumb. I would wrap it up loosely is an ace bandage until I have been seen by a doctor. That way you will not use the thumb.

Ice it for 15 mins wait say 5 to 10 mis and ice it again for 15 mins and repeat as I said.'

it really depends. i know everyone is saying "if you can move it it's not broken and if you can't it's broken." but it's not as cut-and-dry as that. it's just that USUALLY if you can move it it's not broken.

whatever it might be, you need to go to the doctor. if you didn't break it, you might have torn ligaments. i tore a ligament in my thumb this past February and my doctor was very serious about it because if you don't take care of it properly you can easily damage your thumb permanently and that could really affect your life! you use your thumb ALL the time! even after my thumb had supposedly healed, it still hurt me until about a month ago, and that's even after treating it properly. imagine if i hadn't gone to the doctor!

I m a hockey player and I always hurt my thumb. Its best to go get an x ray no matter what. Bullshit its not about if you can move it or not that s pointless don t listen to the others.

Strap it. Elevate. Ice. Doctors.

It may hopefully be only dislocated. But if it had a crack or two, you better have it stabilized or you can get into problems setting it back.

Picture yourself with partial use of your hand. . Scary.

It is best to have it xrayed, and checked by the doctor. Why? This hand is supposed to last a lifetime. Take care of it.

It could be, but unless your in excruciating pain then it probably isn't. Put ice on it and play with something that won't hurt you that bad! Rs~

Try to touch the tips of other fingers with the tip of your thumb. If you can`t , your thumb is broken.

If you are still able to move it, then it probably isn't broken. You should get it checked out though, just to be sure what it could be.
