That matter has historical roots.

In theee past Britain had many colonies around the world including areas that are famous with tea plantation.

In the 16th century the famous East India Company was established and on a later stage it dominated the tea trade between India and the western world.

It was a natural sequence that the English people became familiar and fond of tea more and earlier than the other western nations, and the old tradition of drinking tea and the tea time remained strong in their spirit, as they were the first processor of the different kinds of tea.

Up to date the most famous tea brands are of English origin.

There's so many different kinds of tea! If someone says they don't like tea, I usually assume that they've only tried one or two kinds. There's a tea out there for everyone. And if you don't drink it sweetened, of course it will taste bad!

And in answer to your questions, they are fond of it because it is a cultural custom and medium for socializing.

Probably for the same reason most Americans are so fond of coffee. For the record, I like tea.

I think you watch too many British shows on TV. The idea of
tea time was practiced more by London's upper crust society.
And mainly down to the Victorian period. We've been given
the wrong image of what the British are all about. I have learned alot the last several years from British net friends
who have told me that the hard working British regard "tea'time" as what we call our dinner time. There's
no mid day tea time for people who work for a living. And
when they sit down to dinner of whether it's a meat pie and
chips (french fries) and a salad, they bloody well prefer a
beer with it. And not tea. And they drink coffee just as we do.
They do like tea, but they aren't focused on it, as we might
all think. It's a breakfast drink just like coffee and tea are to
us right here in the states. They have personal preferences,
just as we do. Shocking, isn't it? I used to think that everything
I saw in movies and on TV about anything British had to be
the way everyone was. But that's not the case at all. I hear
how Hollywood slants the truth alot about their customs and
such, and no one has yet to show us another side. Now why
is that? I thought all Brits were snobs and high brows too. Un-
til I was educated to learn different. A good friend of mine,
went on vacation to several countries, and went to see the
net friend I still have. And he and his wife showed my friend
and her husband a very good time. And they were just as
down to earth and friendly as you'd care to meet. I've spoken
to my net friend so many times. He's called to help me with
computer problems and just general conversation. He has
told me that people up north seldom go down to southern
England where the snobby people live in and around London.
They are a different breed down there. So we shouldn't judge
the entire country by just where the snobs congregate and
what they do.

It is because "tea time" is usually the time when they sit down and talk with people they have not seen in a while or just to chat- it's social interaction, and also because it is part of their ritual. They grow up doing that. It also teaches them (and others) patience and kindness to the people they sit down with. And not all of them like tea, you know. Don't be too stereotypical, it's rude.

I don't know why they do but I'm a US citizen, born and raised here and we have tea times, you can definitely set your watch by it. I think it smells and taste much better than coffee.

I think it had to do with the East India Company and India.

Plus they enjoy bitter things in general.
