I'm not nearly as concerned with what they are allowed to buy as with what they *can't* buy with food stamps.

Most people probably don't know that food stamp recipients CAN'T buy...soap, shampoo, toothpaste, dish washing detergent, clothes detergent, mouthwash, deodorant. The list of prohibited ESSENTIALS goes on and on.

The system needs a serious overhaul when welfare families can gorge themselves on twinkies and chips, but can't buy soap to shower with, wash their hair, brush their teeth and wash their clothes.

I used to work as a checker, and some people used their food stamps responsibly, and others bought lots of junk. You know they are going to eat most of the junk themselves, and not share with the kids! If they have to buy nutritious stuff, there's a better chance the selfish ones will share. Or the kids can use the food stamps themselves.

Sure, the body needs other things, but you can find it in fresh meat and fish, bread, milk, and veggies. If the body really needs a candy bar, I think the person better find a way to pay for it with real money -- not with taxpayer money.

I know this is harsh, and I know that many people with food stamps are really good consumers who buy good things for their kids and themselves. But how are you going to build a better life on a bunch of junk food?

People who are on food stamps don't "deserve" potato chips and tootsie rolls -- just like everyone else, they should buy them if they want them. It's a luxury!

But everyone deserves a decent meal, and that's why we have food stamps -- to give people a little helping hand on their way to a better life.

I don't have a problem with the gov. saying how they want "their" money spent. "They" have a right to do this and from my understanding that is how the first food stamp program went. Certain color paper stamps for certain things. Some times taking a step back is going forward.

Now if we ever get a "fat" tax I won't be for that. I like my junk food (once a month) and shouldn't have to pay more for it just because of obesity! :P I'M not fat!!

because they feel if you need the governments ( peoples ) money that bad then you should only buy necessities - i cant totally agree with it but i dont totally disagree with it - come on now - i eat chips with my sandwiches - you know ? but at the same time - i work my *** off and pay taxes and pay my own bills - and some times i cant afford to eat more than one meal a day so i wish i could get food stamps and i cant - so i understand the making it a necessity thing and not a luxury thing - i remember times when i couldnt get any assistnace at all and i was actually homeless - i use to break into the backs of cars so i could get out of the cold at night - and i couldnt get anything -

If I have been to be frivolous, i could purchase the sturdy ice cream on the food market, yet in no way at 7-11....extraordinarily considering the fact that somebody is providing you with charity you should be extra careful concerning the way you spend that.

Food stamps are meant to assist people who are truly needy.
How is it ok to use taxpayers money to buy something that is not a necessity but more of a craving or addiction to junk food.

because the people paying for food stamps want them to be going to people who can't afford food..... not junk food...... if you financially qualify for assistance than you should be doing everything in your power to make your dollars go far and spending $$ on junk food.... also families should be more health concious for their childrens sake
