I ONLY DID 1 STRIP ON MY LEG AND IT HURT LIKE HELL WAS RED FOR A WEEK, BUT, IT DIDNT GOW BACK 4 A MONTH... NEEDLESS TO SAY I LOST MY COURAGE TO GO TO MY FIRST DESTINATION. If you've never shaved/waxed the area before, you will want to trim the hair down to about 1/4".
If you are inexperienced with hot wax, I recommend the sally hanson type pre-cut strips, that you rub between your hands to warm up, peel and then apply. I have always found that these work just as well or better for that area.
After waxing, rather than using lotion, you might try rubbing on a body oil to sooth the skin and take off wax residue. You can also you a version of the 'Silk' type hair smoothing spray to take off residue and soothe skin.
Hope this helps!

Waxing that area at home is very difficult. I am a licensed cosmetologist and I wax. Here in South Florida we do waxing of every imaginable and unimaginable kind. In order to effectively wax without excruciating pain, you need to be able to pull the strip off quickly and at just the right angle to remove the hair without removing the skin and without lots of pain and irritation. You just can't get that angle yourself on certain parts.
Shop around. You should be able to find an affordable waxing professional in your area.

Well, Nair has a product out for bikini waxing. I haven't tried it yet but i'm about to because i'm tired of all the razor bumps and cuts. You can find Nair products at your local Wal-Mart. God bless you.

you should have someone else do it for you, such as a boyfriend or husband or someone like that, as it is usually very difficult to do yourself. also, make sure you are clean and hair is trimmed to 1/4 inch for best results. also, maybe take a pain reliever 30 minutes before hand.
