I'm impressed! Your avatar is male. My brother is 37 years old and has no clue about how to use bleach. What I do is measure about a half cup in a measuring cup for a small load, of a full cup for a medium load, all white, and then start the machine. As the hot water fills up, and I do not put in laundry detergent or fabric softner in this scenario, I dilute the bleach in the sink first, or sometimes just start pouring it right on in. Measuring cup holds two cups, so. Then I like to kinda mix it up some with something and when it is almost full throw in the white clothes. That simple. Some people really don't know how. In fact I had no clue about using bleach until just 5 or 6 years ago.
The bad: if your wearing colored shorts and you try to spot treat something with bleach before laundering you can spill it accidentally on your shorts and they are ruined and you throw them out.
The good: it gets them so clean you save money by not throwing them out and buying new ones.
Fabric softener you're sort of on your own there. I use it. I really don't know if it makes any difference other than they smell nice.

Fabric softner makes things smell really good, like you took a long time, but you didnt, especially if you have a downy ball. Bleach is only good for whites so be careful. Bleach will get out most stains and make your clothes look blindingly white and brand new (and it kills germs!).

Fabric softener leaves a residue on your laundry that is actually a stain fighter and bleach breaks down fabric fibers and wears out your laundry faster.

Ditto on the other answers, but if you use fabric softner sheets, be sure to scrub your lint filter occasionally, because they leave a film on the filter that will reduce the effectiveness of your dryer.

bleach makes your whites whiter and fabric softener makes your clothes soft, and my mom uses it to get the bleach odor off of clothes as well.
