In the late 18th century, American colonists felt passionately that the British were disregarding their rights. To what extent was the United States itself, as evidenced by its’ social, economic and political institutions undemocratic, even when measured against the standards of that time?

As there was no 'self rule' the colonies that became the USA had little power over such issues. The treatment of the indigenous peoples showed as much concern to them as the "whites" were being shown by Britain.
