Bad debts written off and allowance for doubtful debts expense accounts are both expense accounts in the trial balance. The provision for doubtful debts is a balance sheet a/c in the trial balance and is net off the accounts receivable a/c when you show AR in the balance sheet. Actually provision for doubtful debts is the old-fashioned term. The new term is Allowance for doubtful debts because for something to be called a provision you have to fulfill the criteria set out in IAS 37 Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets.
