-Sound property saying the device is working properly

By default, the computer only outputs sound through the speaker when:

1. it is booting up, to give beep codes.
2. Windows will use the speaker to make similar beeps when the sound card driver is not present / functioning.

But the purpose of the PC speaker is not to play sound or music constantly. It sounds extremely awful. There are drivers available to play sound through the speaker, but you can't switch between it and your sound card just by unplugging your external speakers.

according to the support.dell.com pages, this is not uncommon with WinXP. Dell does not seem to have a solution, but I did find drivers for the card that gives the most problems, Crystal Sound Card.

I would suggest going to Dell's website to make sure what sound card you have, but if it is the Crystal one, then you should try the correct driver. If that doesn't work, try some of the other drivers from the same company. If not then, soundblaster always used to work, but that was a number of years ago.

If you did recently upgrade to XP, try going back to Win2k. If the internal card works, then you know what the issue is for sure.

Are you sure the speakers are plugged into the right place. ( sorry but it happens )

Try the link below to troubleshoot, if this doesnt work, you may need new speakers.

good luck
