Tell the thousands to MILLIONS of people that have snakes as pets that they should not have them.....and putting a bird in a cage and taking its ability to fly by clipping its wings is better??

Bloods are not good first time snakes, as they are not a hands on snake and can leave some pretty serious wounds. They also require very specific care requirements.

Rainbow boas alse require specific care and the slightest mistake will leave you with a sick snake and eventually a dead snake.

It is recommended that snakes bigger than 6 ft should not be handled by a single person. Snakes are very muscular and even at 6 ft, they can constrict a person and kill them. It is very, very rare, but can occur.

All of that being said, what do you mean by bigger than a ball? Are you just wanting something longer than a ball, or something heavier bodied? Corns are longer than balls, but remain thin, so easily handled by one person. They also come in many, many colors. If you are looking for something thicker, there are various boas and pythons you could choose from. There are "red tailed" boas you can choose from, some of which being smaller than others. Nicaraguan boas, hog island boas stay in the 4-6 ft range, along with a few other dwarf species. There are spotted pythons, that get in the 4 ft range, childrens pythons are about the same as the spotteds. They also have dwarf burmese pythons, but they are rare and expensive. I suggest checking out kingsnake.com for their care sheets and browsing the classifieds just to see what is available and then research individual snakes you are interested in since no one can really tell you what would work best for you.

You could go with a Brazilian Rainbow boa, which have a beautiful rainbow sheen to their body and range in color form an orange to a deep reddish brown. They require a little more humidity than most snakes but are quite pretty and tame down to be great snakes as long as they are handled properly from a young age. My roommate currently has several of these snakes and they are great. Check out www.kingsnake.com they have a rainbow boa forum

You're correct, Blood pythons can get very thick and stout, requiring a lot of space. And they're not always the sweetest snake, in my own experience.

Jungle Carpet pythons are gorgeous with yellow markings on a velvet black background and can be very sweet-tempered, growing to around 8-10 feet with a manageable diameter and not stout enough to cause serious strangulation worries.

go for a red tailed boa, they get to be about 13, twice the sized of a ball python.

try to stay away from burmese pythons, they are great pets, but have a bad temper

Snakes should not be pets.. Get a parrot or some fish is you want to put something in a tank or cage.
